If you don’t know what you are doing, get a warranty.

Just like any computer, the first factor is determining what its primary use will be.

That said, if you are only going to use it at home, why do you want a laptop

Ok, first don’t be sold on the look, just because a computer looks good doesn’t mean it is good.

First ask yourself what your going to be doing with the Laptop, and what you need it to do.

I’ll assume your like me, and you don’t know what your going to do and you’ll need it to do anything when you need it.

Processor-Duo Core 2 is the way to go, I know you don’t know the jaron, but it’s printed on the laptop. So it will be there for you to see.

Memory(ram)- You want at least 2 gigs now-a-days, That’s enough for gaming, programing, basic work, and keeping your online sessions enjoyable.

Hard drive space(where you store everything)- there are so many options out today, but if your buying new you probably won’t get less that 100gigs, and what that means is, that is a lot of F***ing space, unless you do video editing, you’ll need more space, or you download way to much.

Video cards- 256 is good, higher is better, but don’t go lower that 256MB. if with in your price range go NVIDIA. it’s pretty easy bigger is better here.

Not all laptops come with a webcam, but most do, and this is purely cosmetic. If you need it get, if not, don’t worry

Sound cards- ok, I’m really strict on this, but what’s the point in trying to get super sound out of a laptop. It’s two tiny speakers and it’s not going to generate movie quality surround sound, unless your in a really quite room. If you want higher sound spend the extra money and buy a super good amplified speaker system

My last and final note, think about yourself, if your clumsy, get a tough note book like an IBM, or Dell, If you very gentle with your hardware something like a compaq or hp.

As far as a service plan goes, get one if you have doubts and this is your first purchase, but don’t let them get you for more than 3 years, because by then your laptop will be obsolete.

    RAM more the better
O/s (operating System) what are you using it for? home or office / on the road..home if you you can use XP home or Pro,…if you must suffer get Vista Home premium for Home or if you have the cash get Vista Ultimate..
DO you want to watch DVDS only or be able to watch & burn dvds – get a dvdwriter, burns dvds & cds.
Graphics card will you be using it for gaming or spreadsheets etc & general browsing, gaming laptops the few that there are have HIGH end cards & cost your average laptop has the basic quality card for surfing and watching a dvd – the MORE graphics card ram the better…but you WILL lose on another part of the machine its life, unless yuou haveloads of money & can custom a laptop to a specific spec for YOU!!!
Sound few options usually what you get is it.
Do you need a wireless connection for on the train or around the house always good to have.
screen size a small 12.4 or regular 15.4inch screen suite most folks, some decent 17inch screens Those are some essentials , IF you can get it WITH a OEM CD & minimum bundled trial junk software you will be fine.
The HARD DRIVE IS also vital – bigger is not always best best.
