If the windows vista that came with my laptop went bad how can I get it replaced without buying a new one?

I bought a laptop from best buy with geek squad service. It worked fine for a year but then Vista quit on me. I took it to best buy and they said they don’t cover software and tried to sell me a new copy of Vista.
